New Toll Tax System in India: No More FASTag from March 1, 2025

If you often travel on highways and are tired of dealing with FASTag issues, there’s good news for you. From March 1, 2025, the FASTag system will be discontinued, and a new automatic toll deduction system will be introduced. This advanced system aims to make travel smoother and hassle-free. Let’s explore how the new system works, its benefits, and what you need to do to prepare for it.

Why is FASTag Being Discontinued?

FASTag was introduced in 2016 to reduce congestion at toll plazas and promote digital payments. However, several issues have emerged over the years, including:

  • FASTag scanners not working properly, causing vehicles to stop.
  • Fraudulent use of duplicate or fake FASTags.
  • Unnecessary overcharging of FASTag users.
  • Vehicles without balance getting stuck at toll plazas, leading to traffic jams.

To address these challenges, the government is introducing a smarter and more efficient toll collection system.

How Will Toll Be Deducted from March 1, 2025?

The government is implementing an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. This technology will scan vehicle number plates and automatically deduct the toll amount, eliminating the need for any tags or balance checks.

How Does ANPR Work?

  1. Camera-Based Scanning – High-resolution cameras at toll plazas will scan vehicle number plates.
  2. Database Matching – The vehicle number will be matched with the government database to identify the registered owner.
  3. Automatic Payment – The toll amount will be deducted from the linked bank account, mobile wallet, or UPI ID.
  4. Seamless Travel – Vehicles can pass through toll plazas without stopping.

This system is already in use in countries like the USA and several European nations, and now India is adopting it.

Benefits of the New Toll Collection System

1. Seamless Travel

No more long queues or waiting at toll plazas—vehicles can move smoothly without stopping.

2. Fraud Prevention

With automatic number plate scanning, fake or duplicate FASTags can no longer be misused.

3. Accurate Charges

You’ll be charged only for the distance traveled, eliminating unnecessary deductions.

4. Cashless & Paperless System

Digital transactions ensure transparency and eliminate manual toll collection.

5. Reduced Traffic & Pollution

Less congestion at toll plazas will lead to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

What Do You Need to Do?

You don’t need to make major changes, as the system will be linked automatically to your vehicle registration number. However, ensure the following:

  • Your vehicle has a High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP).
  • Your bank account or UPI ID is linked to your vehicle registration for automatic payments.
  • If your number plate is old, consider upgrading to HSRP.

What Happens If You Have Low Balance?

Many users worry about what happens if their account doesn’t have enough funds. The government may introduce these measures:

  • First-time insufficient balance – An alert will be sent.
  • Second-time – A warning will be issued with time to make payment.
  • Repeated non-payment – The vehicle may face penalties or be blacklisted.

Real-Life Scenarios: How Will This Change Your Journey?

Case Study 1: Amit’s Daily Commute

Amit travels daily between Delhi and Gurugram and often waits 5–10 minutes at toll plazas due to FASTag issues. Sometimes, his FASTag gets overcharged.

After March 2025, with the new ANPR system, he will pass tolls without stopping, and only the correct amount will be deducted.

Case Study 2: Seema’s Problem Solved

Seema has faced frequent problems with FASTag balance running out, causing delays. Sometimes, she doesn’t receive OTPs for manual payments.

With the new system, she won’t need to worry about FASTag balance, as payments will be deducted automatically.

Future Developments in Toll Collection

The government is continuously working to improve this system. Some possible future enhancements include:

  • GPS-Based Tolling – Toll charges based on the exact distance traveled.
  • Expansion to City Roads – Similar electronic toll collection within urban areas.
  • Smart Road Infrastructure – Improved traffic management for smoother journeys.

Is This Change Beneficial for You?

From March 1, 2025, the FASTag system will be completely replaced by the ANPR-based tolling system. This change is designed to:

✔ Reduce traffic congestion ✔ Ensure accurate toll payments ✔ Offer a seamless, cashless travel experience ✔ Improve highway infrastructure

What Should You Do Now?

✔ Ensure your vehicle has an HSRP number plate ✔ Link your bank account or UPI ID to your vehicle number ✔ Stay updated with government notifications

This modern and smart toll collection system is a step toward making Indian highways more efficient and traveler-friendly. Get ready for a smoother, smarter, and hassle-free journey!
